Michelle Stegen Gilder

Michelle grew up in Durban and started ballet and dance training at the age of four, studying with various Durban teachers over the years including Paddy Chelin, Winsome Fuller and Dudley von Loggenburg .

She competed at the South African Society for the Advancement of Dancing (SASAD) Natal Dance Festival from 1988 - 1996 in various dance style solos such as Classical Ballet, Character, National, Modern, Tap and group Acrobatics, duets and trios. Michelle won the prestigious Jimmy Bolton trophy and was awarded the Most Versatile Dancer of the season.

She attended Pro-Arte Arts School in Pretoria, Gauteng for 1993 where she passed her RAD Elementary exam with Commended and was part of the school team to attend the RAD London Summer School that year. She returned to KwaZulu-Natal in 1994 and completed her RAD Intermediate Part 1 exam with Honours.

In 1997 - her matric year - Michelle started Rhythmic Gymnastics and represented KwaZulu-Natal at the National Competition and won 1st place overall in her age category. She was a Principal for the KwaZulu-Natal Youth Dance Company,
received Honorary Colours and the Floating Trophy for Sport at her high school and selected to be prefect by her peers. She passed her RAD Advanced Exam and matriculated with a university exemption and a distinction in Ballet (as 7th subject).

In 1998 Michelle commenced full-time professional vocational training at University of Cape Town's School of Dance in classical ballet, contemporary, dance studies, performance studies, body conditioning, dance teaching method, musicology and notation. Michelle graduated in 2000 with a Dance Teacher's Diploma that was awarded with a Distinction in Classical Ballet. Michelle was on the Dean's Merit List for all three years of her attendance at UCT and won the UCT Entrance Merit Scholarship in 1998 & 1999.

Upon graduating, Michelle was invited to join the corps de ballet of Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB). Michelle danced soloist roles from the outset (Gypsy Girl in Veronica Paeper's "Two Pigeons" and the Spanish from Swan Lake), rising through the ranks dancing various roles including Jean-Paul Comelin's "Les Nuits d'Eté(Third Movement) and Kitri's friend in "Don Quixote", eventually being promoted to Senior Soloist and dancing Myrtha, Queen of the Willis in "Giselle".

Michelle headed abroad to continue her professional dance career, joining the entertainment team of the Seven Seas Hotel in Turkey to dance in Denise Britz's mini-extravaganzas, including featuring in the pas de deux. She was accepted in a private audition, to be part of the dance team for the Costa Classica cruise ship, which consisted of various theatre shows, entertainment pieces, pas de deux and a pointe solo.

In 2006 Michelle returned to South Africa and joined the Johannesburg Events & Hospitality Industry. When she was temporarily laid off due to COVID restrictions on the industry due to the new variant in 2021, she realised and re-discovered her passion for dance.

Michelle was fortunate to return to ballet as a teacher as she had worked so very hard to achieve her own goals in ballet, she felt it her duty to share with a new generation both the knowledge imparted to her, over the years, and the reward that this beautiful artform bestows on dedicated and hardworking dancers.

Andrew Gilder

Andrew grew up in Durban and swam competitively at provincial and national levels and trained karate and aikido, during his school years. He began working in the theatre from the age of fifteen (1982), starting ballet training while studying for his bachelor-of-arts and bachelor-of-laws degrees (1985 to 1989). After graduating from law school, he received full-time professional vocational training in classical ballet, contemporary and jazz dance techniques (University of Cape Town’s School of Dance, 1990 to 1992).

In 1992, Andrew joined the NAPAC Dance Company (which later became the Playhouse Dance Company under the Artistic Directorship of Mark Hawkins) where he was fortunate to dance a very wide range of ensemble, soloist and principal roles in both repertory and new dance works and to create his own original choreography.

Andrew's personal performance repertoire includes Oberon and Lysander ("Mid-Summer Night's Dream", choreography by Mark Hawkins), Second Movement pas de deux and Death (Jean-Paul Comelin's "Le Nuits d'Eté"), Harlequinade Pas de Quarte (set by Dianne Richards after Anton Dolin), Summer Day pas de deux (choreography by Jack Carter), Cain in "Cage of God" (choreography by Jack Carter), Franz (Coppelia, third act, set by Dianne Richards after Ashley Killar), Le Corsaire, Don Quixote and White Swan pas de deux (Swan Lake, Act 2, set by Dianne Richards), Waltz of the Flowers (pas de deux from Nutcracker, after Ashely Killar set by Anne Layfield), Shostakovich Pas de Deux (choreography by Rajmund Nirewicz, set by Mark Hawkins), and "Brother Brother" (male pas de deux) and "Still", both by Boyzie Cekwana.

Andrew choreographed the operas "Carmen" in 1996 (being extremely lucky to work with Sibongile Khumalo in the role of Carmen and Sibongile Ngoma in the role of Micaela) and "The Magic Flute", and he has directed and choreographed musicals for schools such as "Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat", "Oklahoma" and "Guys and Dolls".

In 1997, Andrew left South Africa to continue his dance career in Turkey, before returning to perform in the Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company’s inaugural season, entitled "Triptych" (September 1998). Andrew lived and worked in Cape Town between late 1998 and early 2003, taking the opportunity to direct and choreograph high school musicals and to teach classic ballet technique classes (including for Jazzart Dance Theatre), while completing his legal master’s degree and qualifying as an attorney.

In 2003, Andrew relocated to Johannesburg to work in the legal profession and to teach classic ballet technique at the Dance Factory and for various local dance companies. Andrew also assisted in the establishment of the South African International Ballet Competition for which he has been Chair and Co-Chair of the Board since 2008. Between 1998 and 2014, Andrew regularly reviewed theatre and dance productions and wrote about dance and dance-related issues for the Turkish Daily News (out of Istanbul), Dance Europe (out of London), and the Mail and Guardian, the Cape Times, The Star, New Day and the Financial Mail (back in South Africa).

During his dance career, Andrew is supremely lucky to have been taught by some of the most important South African ballet masters, including Dudley Tomlinson, Dianne Richards, Elizabeth Triegaardt and Dudley von Loggenburg. Andrew relies on the knowledge he received from these and other local and international luminaries when he teaches our open ballet classes and classical technique to the renowned Flatfoot Dance Company.

Michelle and Andrew met when they were both working on Jean-Paul Comelin's "Firebird" (for the Playhouse Dance Company), and tied the knot in 2009 in an intimate garden wedding in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.

They have two miniature dachshunds named Oscar & Bella who are spoilt rotten.
